PIB Fact Check: All videos featuring PM Modi and Union Ministers are fake
Videos have been circulating heavily on social media recently, showing PM Modi, Union Ministers, and Army officers threatening students protesting at Jantar Mantar. This has been adding fuel to the fire. However, PIB FACT CHECK has clarified the matter, confirming that all these videos are fake and stating that they are AI-generated.
PIB clarified that neither PM Modi nor the Union Ministers made any such comments as shown in those fake videos. It stated that some Pakistan-based networks are taking advantage of the ongoing protests in the country to circulate these videos.
PIB also mentioned that a video of Union Minister Piyush Goyal—where he was assuring strict action against question paper leaks—was morphed using AI. It advised the public to report any suspicious or fake content related to the Union Government to them via +8799711259 or Email: factcheck@pib.gov.in.
On the 23rd of this month, the Delhi Police alleged that more than 480 Pakistan-based social media accounts were spreading false propaganda. They stated that through these accounts, attempts were being made to incite students by spreading rumors, fake posts, and edited videos. It was revealed that the process of identifying and blocking these accounts is underway.
The Delhi Police stated on July 23 that around 480 social media accounts have been identified and blocked so far. According to the police, these accounts are attempting to manipulate the situation to their advantage by spreading misinformation and fraudulent posts on social media.
The police noted that they observed the spread of misinformation on social media, with hundreds of Pakistan-operated accounts running a coordinated campaign to spread false narratives around this protest. “We have observed misinformation being spread on social media. So far, we have identified over 480 Pakistan-based social media accounts that took advantage of this situation to spread misinformation and rumors. We are blocking these accounts,” police said.
