Accept Our Conditions to Pass the Bill: DMK’s Twist

The Central Government has taken the Delimitation Bill as a matter of high prestige, making strong efforts to introduce it in the House and secure support from all sides. However, as this issue is closely tied to politics and power, opposition parties are treating it with equal seriousness. While the NDA seeks support from the DMK for the Delimitation Bill, the DMK has agreed conditionally by putting forward three specific terms to extend its support.

The DMK’s first condition is that the policy of freezing the number of seats based on the 1971 census, which expires in 2027, must be maintained as is. The second condition demands a uniform 50 percent increase in Lok Sabha seats across all states, an aspect the DMK claims Union Home Minister Amit Shah has orally agreed to. The third condition requires the Centre to publish a comprehensive list of revised Lok Sabha constituencies for all states alongside the new legislation.

While the DMK states it will immediately support the Delimitation Bill if these three conditions are met, there is no official positive response from the Centre yet. Previously, the DMK strongly opposed the bill, citing that it went against the interests of southern states. However, following Congress’s alliance with Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections and the subsequent end of the DMK-Congress alliance, speculations are rife that the MK Stalin-led DMK may now back the bill.
