Dilip Chauhan Congratulates Mayor-Elect Mamdani on his Victory
Prominent South Asian Community Leader and Former Deputy Comptroller of Nassau County, Dilip Chauhan, an early supporter of Zohran Mamdani, extended heartfelt congratulations to Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani on his remarkable victory.
Mamdani, who is set to become New York City’s first Muslim mayor, received 1,036,051 votes — 50.4% of the total — defeating Cuomo.
“Today is a truly remarkable moment for our community,” said Dilip Chauhan. “Zohran Mamdani becoming the first South Asian American, Indian American, and Muslim American Mayor of New York City is not just a political milestone — it is a story of all of us.
This is the victory of our youth, our elders, our uncles and aunties, our shop owners, our taxi and Uber drivers, our teachers, our parents who worked long hours so their children could dream bigger.
This is a victory for every immigrant who came to New York hoping not only to live here — but to belong here.
Zohran has always stayed focused on what matters: affordability, fairness, dignity for working families, and a city where everyone has a chance to stand tall. He listened to the struggles of real people, and he spoke with clarity and courage.
We have shown that immigrant dreams do not just survive in New York — they lead New York.
Today, our community did not just witness history. Today, we helped shape it.”
Chauhan added, “As we celebrate Diwali — the Festival of Lights — Zohran’s victory shines like a Diwali lamp, symbolizing hope, inclusion, and a brighter future for all New Yorkers. I have no doubt that he will do a great job leading this city with compassion and vision.”
Dilip Chauhan, known for his advocacy and for helping make Diwali an official holiday in New York City public schools, called this moment “a light of unity and pride for the entire South Asian community.”
