Aamir Khan Reunites with Ashutosh Gowariker for Another sports Drama
Nearly 25 years after creating cinematic history with Lagaan, Bollywood star Aamir Khan is reportedly reuniting with director Ashutosh Gowariker for another ambitious sports drama. Titled Lalkaara, the film is said to be backed by Excel Entertainment in association with Rajkumar Hirani, with production expected to commence in October. The makers are aiming for a theatrical release in 2027.
Inspired by the historic 1952 India- Pakistan Test series, Lalkaara will go beyond the cricket field to explore the social and political landscape of post- Partition India. Aamir Khan is reportedly being considered to portray India’s first Test captain, Lala Amarnath. The screenplay is being written by Piyush Gupta and Neeraj Singh.
Given the iconic status of Lagaan as one of Indian cinema’s greatest sports dramas, the reunion of Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker has already generated considerable excitement among film enthusiasts. The project is also seen as a significant comeback opportunity for Gowariker, whose recent films have struggled at the box office.
Meanwhile, Aamir Khan continues to expand his slate as both an actor and producer. Besides Lalkaara, he is reportedly associated with Batwara 1947 and the much awaited 3 Idiots sequel, which is expected to reunite him with director Rajkumar Hirani.
