Normally, when a director’s film becomes a blockbuster and receives praise from critics, its journey ends there. But that is not what happened with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. As the film continues its successful run worldwide, billionaire Elon Musk has unexpectedly entered the conversation. With a single post on X, he surprised Hollywood by saying, “I will remake The Odyssey.”

Public criticism between filmmakers is not unusual in Hollywood. However, announcing a new version of a film made by one of the world’s most respected directors, Christopher Nolan, has now become an international talking point.

Where did this controversy begin?

This did not start overnight. The disagreement began when Nolan announced The Odyssey. Reports that Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o had been cast as Helen of Troy drew a strong reaction from Musk. Criticizing the casting, he wrote on social media that “Nolan has lost his integrity.”

At the time, it looked like just another opinion. But now, by declaring that “I will make my own version of the story,” the disagreement has turned into a direct challenge to Nolan’s film.

Musk says his version of The Odyssey will not be like Nolan’s. He plans to present Homer’s classic epic in a “historically accurate” form and says he will complete it before the end of this year using his AI platform, Grok Imagine.

But this raises an important question: Is The Odyssey really a historical story? Homer’s original work is filled with mythical characters, including a one-eyed giant, strange sea creatures, and a witch who turns men into pigs. Historians also consider it Greek mythology rather than historical fact. That is why many experts are questioning what Musk means by calling it “historically accurate.”

Nolan’s version is already a massive success

The interesting part is that Musk is not challenging a failed film. Nolan’s The Odyssey is already creating waves at the global box office. It opened with about $264 million worldwide, earned a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score, received an A CinemaScore from audiences, and is now moving toward the $1 billion club.

This suggests that Musk is not trying to stop Nolan’s success but is attempting to present his own interpretation alongside Nolan’s cinematic vision.

After transforming the automobile industry, space technology, and artificial intelligence, Elon Musk is now looking toward filmmaking—and that too by openly challenging a legendary filmmaker like Christopher Nolan.
