Tragic Motel Fire in Ohio Claims Lives of Indian Family
A devastating fire at an Econo Lodge motel in Wooster Township, Ohio, early Wednesday morning, July 1, 2026, has claimed the lives of three members of an Indian-origin family. The victims have been identified by the Wayne County Coroner’s Office as Hiteshkumar Suthar, his wife Hinaben Suthar, and their daughter Isha (also identified as Ishani) Suthar.
The Tragic Sequence of Events:
The blaze was reported at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time. Firefighters arriving at the scene discovered heavy flames already shooting through the roof of a detached, one-story section at the rear of the motel. Despite the rapid arrival of emergency crews, the intensity of the fire made rescue attempts unsuccessful.
Motel employee April Graser, who was working the overnight shift, recounted the heartbreaking final moments of the victims. She received a desperate phone call from Hiteshkumar Suthar, who pleaded for help as they found themselves trapped inside their living quarters. Graser, who immediately contacted 911, instructed the family to move to the bathroom and turn on the water in an attempt to shield themselves from the smoke and heat. Tragically, communication was lost shortly thereafter, and it is believed the family succumbed to smoke inhalation before rescuers could gain access to their room.
Emergency Response:
The situation was quickly elevated to a “five-alarm” fire due to its size and complexity, necessitating a response from approximately 70 firefighters across 15 different departments. While crews were able to bring the blaze under control within an hour and successfully evacuate other guests from the main motel complex, the family in the rear unit could not be saved. One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the operation.
Investigation Underway:
The cause of the fire remains under active investigation by the Wooster Township Fire Department, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Authorities have stated that all possibilities, including the origin and nature of the fire, are being scrutinized as part of the formal probe.
The tragedy has resonated deeply both in the local Wooster community and in the family’s hometown in Gujarat, India. As the community mourns the loss of the Suthar family, authorities continue their work to determine the circumstances that led to this catastrophic event.
