Elk Grove, CA — On Monday, October 13, the City of Elk Grove lit up with joy and tradition as hundreds gathered at District 56 for the 6th annual Diwali Festival. Hosted by USA Sanatan in partnership with the City of Elk Grove Diversity & Inclusion Commission, the free community event celebrated Diwali—the Indian Festival of Lights—with vibrant cultural performances, a dazzling fashion show, and an interfaith Diya (lamp) lighting ceremony.

Public officials and community leaders shared heartfelt remarks, while guests enjoyed complimentary dinner and traditional Diwali sweets. “This festival celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil,” said Bhavin Parikh, lead organizer. “It’s a joy to see our community come together in such a meaningful way.”

Elk Grove City Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen emphasized Elk Grove’s commitment to inclusion: “We are one of the most diverse cities in the United States. We are a city that is welcome to all.” Attendees echoed the sentiment, calling the event “beautiful” and “one of my favorites.”

This year’s celebration carried added significance following Governor Gavin Newsom’s signing of Assembly Bill 268 earlier in October. The new law officially recognizes Diwali as a California state holiday, effective January 1, 2026. Under the legislation, community colleges and public schools may close in observance, and state employees can elect to take the day off. Certain school and college staff will receive paid time off.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is celebrated by Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities and traditionally occurs after the final harvest of the year, typically in October or November. Its date varies annually based on the Hindu lunar calendar—this year, it fell on October 20. California joins Pennsylvania and Connecticut in officially recognizing the holiday, while New Jersey and New York City have also taken steps to accommodate observance in schools.

The celebration continues with another Diwali event scheduled at the California State Capitol in Sacramento on Tuesday, further highlighting the growing recognition of this cherished tradition.
