A Dancer’s Path to the Big Screen: Susovan Sonu Roy Makes His Bengali Film Debut

Long before he appeared on a film set, Susovan Sonu Roy’s connection to performance began on stage. Trained in Western dance, he spent years performing in front of audiences. That experience eventually led him toward acting, and his journey has now brought him to Bengali cinema with Take Care Bhalobasa.

In the film, Roy plays Joy, a character whose presence is woven into a story that explores friendship, relationships and the emotional shifts that come with time.

Roy was born in Howrah and raised in Kolkata. He completed his B.Com from Dum Dum Motijheel Rabindra Mahavidyalaya in 2016. Although his mother had wanted him to learn music, he chose to train in Western pop dance instead. Those years of stage performances gradually sparked his interest in acting and eventually led him towards the screen.

He later trained at an acting workshop conducted by director Pijush Saha before entering Bengali television. His first screen appearance came in Anandamoyee Maa, directed by the late Debidas Bhattacharya, where he played a Vaishnav devotee. Over the following years, he appeared in television serials including Mohor, Korapakhi, Titli, Khelaghar and Jamuna Dhaki, taking on different roles across productions.

When television production slowed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Roy expanded into modelling. He worked with brands such as Holiday Inn, Dabur, Titan Eye+, Amazon, Spencer’s, Big Bazaar and Velocity Eyewear. In 2025, he was named first runner-up at the Ethnic Elegance 2025 pageant.

With Take Care Bhalobasa, Roy has now entered Bengali cinema after building experience across dance, television and modelling. His role as Joy marks a new phase in his career, continuing a journey that began years earlier through Western dance.
