WhatsApp Testing Date of Birth Prompt in India
Don’t be surprised if you open WhatsApp and see a new message asking you to enter your date of birth. WhatsApp is currently testing this new feature for selected users in India.
Why is WhatsApp asking for your Date of Birth?
This change is due to the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act introduced by the Government of India. Under this law, digital services that handle the personal data of children under 18 must take steps to verify their age. Therefore, WhatsApp is testing this new system.
No Need to Worry
This is currently just a test feature. Even if you do not enter your date of birth, WhatsApp will continue to work normally. Additionally, Meta has clarified that your age information will not be shared with other WhatsApp users.
Impact on Users
There won’t be much change for regular adult users. However, this information will help provide better safety and stronger privacy protection for children under 18 years of age.
While this feature is currently available to only a few users, similar changes are likely to appear across more digital services in the coming days as India’s new digital laws come into effect.
