Swaraj Tractors and Mahindra Susten Commission Punjab’s Major Group Captive Solar Project

Swaraj Tractors, part of the Mahindra Group, and Mahindra Susten, the Group’s renewable energy platform and Independent Power Producer, announced the commissioning of a 42 MWp group captive solar project in Bathinda, Punjab, which stands among the largest group captive solar installations of its kind in the state. The project is expected to meet around 50% of the electricity requirements of Swaraj Tractors’ manufacturing facilities, marking a major milestone in the company’s broader strategy to build a future-ready, low-carbon manufacturing ecosystem aligned with the Mahindra Group’s sustainability commitments.

Project Infrastructure and Technological Features:
Developed and commissioned by Mahindra Susten, the solar facility spans approximately 141 acres in Village Teona Pujarian, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda, supplying renewable electricity to Swaraj Tractors’ manufacturing, assembly, and foundry operations in Mohali, Punjab. The installation features high-efficiency N-Type TOPCon bifacial solar modules mounted on fixed-tilt structures to optimize available land use and enhance energy output, while its residual capacity is slated to green the electricity consumption of other Mahindra Group entities in the state. Designed to generate roughly 61.54 million units of clean electricity annually and offset over 42,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year, the project boasts strong domestic backing with more than 97% of its components sourced locally from within India. Furthermore, it incorporates semi-automated robotic cleaning systems that save an estimated 1.92 million litres of water annually, alongside comprehensive environmental, social, and climate change assessments implemented to manage waste, regulate vehicle movement, and minimize ecological disturbance.

Leadership Insights and Sustainability Roadmap:
Mr. Gaganjot Singh, Chief Executive Officer of the Swaraj Division at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., noted that the brand was founded on self-reliance and is contributing to a greener environment by reducing energy consumption and progressively replacing conventional sources with renewables. He added that the project builds upon Swaraj receiving the Golden Peacock Award for Energy Efficiency earlier in the year.

Mr. Avinash Rao, Managing Director and CEO of Mahindra Susten, stated that the project marks the firm’s maiden foray into supplying power to creditworthy commercial and industrial customers through a group captive structure, complementing traditional models of supplying power to government utilities. Swaraj’s wider sustainability journey includes achieving EP100 certification for doubling energy productivity across all manufacturing plants in 2023, maintaining water-positive and Zero Waste to Landfill facility certifications, and winning the Golden Peacock Award for CSR Excellence in February 2026.
