Indian-Origin CEO Shankh Mitra Is World’s Second-Highest-Paid Executive After Elon Musk
The world’s highest-paid corporate executive after Elon Musk is a person of Indian origin. Shankh Mitra, CEO of US-based healthcare real estate firm Welltower, reportedly earns a pay package of Rs 7,744 crore ($821 million) a year, a figure no other CEO in any company comes close to matching, aside from Musk himself. Musk earns $158 billion as a CEO, in a category entirely his own. No other chief executive operates anywhere near that scale, and Mitra’s package is the next-highest in the world.
A Broader Trend In CEO Pay
According to The Wall Street Journal, CEO compensation rose sharply last year, with the number of executives earning more than $200 million climbing to its highest level since 2021, with 2025 recording the most such cases yet.
From Kolkata To Wall Street
Mitra studied in Kolkata before completing his MBA at Columbia Business School in the US. He went on to work at firms including Citadel LLC and Millennium Management before joining Welltower in 2016.
