Empowering Women Entrepreneurs Through Kotak and NSRCEL Initiative
Kotak Mahindra Bank: In a significant stride toward bridging the gender gap in India’s startup ecosystem, Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (KMBL) and NSRCEL have announced the latest edition of the Women Startup Program (WSP). By integrating this initiative into the broader “Kotak BizLabs” framework, the partnership aims to provide comprehensive, long-cycle support tailored to the unique challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, with a strategic emphasis on talent emerging from Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
Addressing the Barriers to Growth:
While India’s startup landscape is thriving boasting over 223,000 recognized ventures women founders continue to encounter systemic hurdles. These include restricted access to institutional credit, a lack of professional mentorship, and societal expectations that often demand disproportionate time for caregiving. These challenges are particularly pronounced in non-metropolitan areas, where the infrastructure for professional growth and risk-taking remains underdeveloped.
A Four-Phase Architectural Approach:
Recognizing that the path to entrepreneurship is rarely linear, the WSP has moved beyond traditional, one-size-fits-all incubation. The program is now structured across four critical stages:
Foundation Phase: Designed for aspiring founders to explore and validate the concept of entrepreneurship.
Pre-incubation: A rigorous stage to stress-test business ideas and refine models.
Incubation: Focuses on evolving, iterating, and pivoting ventures for market viability.
Scale-up Hub: Provides established founders with the resources needed for growth, market expansion, and enhanced credibility.
Building a Self-Reinforcing Ecosystem:
Himanshu Nivsarkar, Head – CSR & ESG at Kotak Mahindra Bank, emphasized that the program addresses a fundamental need beyond capital: community. “For many women, the bigger challenge is the lack of a peer ecosystem that supports them in long-term decision-making,” Nivsarkar noted. “The Women Startup Program is committed to building that network, ensuring that women founders possess the confidence and continuity required to sustain their journey.”
Echoing this sentiment, Rasika Prashant, CEO of NSRCEL, highlighted the geographic shift in innovation. “The next wave of entrepreneurship in India will emerge from diverse geographies,” she stated. “By combining mentorship, market access, and peer learning, we are building pathways that allow women in non-metros to transform local solutions into scalable, sustainable ventures.”
Looking Ahead:
The program’s impact continues to grow, having already supported over 600 entrepreneurs. Building on the momentum of the 2025 cohort which provided ₹3 crore in funding to 30 startups this new phase is set to deepen its outreach to regional institutions. By fostering ventures in sectors such as regenerative agriculture, waste upcycling, and community-led education, the Women Startup Program under Kotak BizLabs is successfully democratizing access to the startup ecosystem, ensuring that location is no longer a barrier to ambition.
