Data Breach Cost Climbs to ₹25.5 Crore in India, Says IBM Report

While artificial intelligence continues to unlock new opportunities, it is also rapidly escalating cyber threats across the corporate landscape, according to IBM’s ‘2026 Cost of a Data Breach’ report. In India, the average cost of a data breach per company hit a record high of ₹25.5 crore, marking a 15.9 percent increase from ₹22 crore in the previous year.

AI-driven attacks accounted for 26 percent of all cyber incidents, making them a major driver of this surge. Other dominant threat vectors included phishing (19 percent), drive-by compromises (16 percent), and supply-chain attacks (15 percent). Among all industries, the financial services sector suffered the highest average breach cost, standing at a massive ₹40.9 crore.

The Cost Difference with AI Defense
The report underscores a dramatic financial divide between organizations that leverage security automation and those that do not:

With AI and Security Automation: Companies that extensively deployed AI-driven security automation kept their average breach cost down to ₹21.3 crore.

Without AI Integration: Organizations operating without AI security tools incurred significantly higher average breach costs, reaching ₹31.6 crore.

Following a cyber incident, 73 percent of surveyed organizations decided to increase their investments in overall security systems. IBM emphasized that companies must step up funding in early detection systems, rapid incident response, AI-powered security frameworks, and continuous employee training. Taking these proactive measures is essential for mitigating future cyber threats and protecting businesses from devastating financial losses.
