China’s AI is Shocking America..! What is Actually Happening?
— Surya Prakash Josyula
The world used to think that American AIs like ChatGPT and Claude ruled the market, but now there is a new twist. On OpenRouter—a popular platform used by American developers—the use of Chinese AI models shot up from just 4.5% to over 30% in a single year. CNBC reported that in recent weeks, this share even touched 46%.
What is OpenRouter? It is a platform where developers can access and use many different AI models—like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek—all in one place.
There is one main reason for this massive shift: almost the same level of performance, but at a much lower cost. For instance, the GLM 5.2 model, created by the Chinese company Z.ai, is giving tough competition to Claude 4.5 Opus, which is considered one of the most powerful AIs in the world. Moreover, OpenRouter data shows it delivers this top-level performance at nearly one-fifth of the cost.
This has now triggered new worries in America. As the use of Chinese-developed AI models grows, people are raising serious questions about data privacy and national security. A debate has started worldwide: Is China silently changing the game in the AI field, which was once completely dominated by America?
