Amazon Web Services Expands Hyderabad Footprint with Landmark US$21 Billion Infrastructure Investment

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially broken ground on a new data centre in Hyderabad, marking a significant step in the expansion of the AWS (Asia Pacific) Hyderabad Region. The ceremony, attended by the Honourable Chief Minister of Telangana, Shri A. Revanth Reddy, underscores Amazon’s deepening commitment to bolstering India’s digital economy and artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions. This initiative is a core component of Amazon’s massive investment strategy, which includes a planned US$48 billion commitment in India, with US$21 billion specifically earmarked for cloud and AI infrastructure between 2026 and 2030.

Strategic Importance to Telangana:
The expansion has received strong backing from the Telangana government, which views the development as a critical endorsement of its ambition to become India’s AI and cloud capital. “The foundation stone laying for the Amazon Web Services data centre in Bharat Future City will serve as a stepping stone for a wide range of investments and businesses to come forward,” noted Chief Minister Shri A. Revanth Reddy.

Shri D. Sridhar Babu, Minister for Information Technology and Industries, highlighted that the state’s focus on progressive policies, reliable infrastructure, and clean energy has created an ecosystem capable of attracting global-scale investments. This new facility will provide startups, enterprises, and government organizations with enhanced access to secure cloud technologies and custom AI services, enabling them to scale operations globally.

Commitment to Workforce Development:
Beyond physical infrastructure, AWS is actively building a talent pipeline to support its operations in India. The Amazon Data Centre Skilling Program, now in its fourth year, provides technical training in Critical Facilities Operations Management and Critical Compute Operations.

Training Impact: The program has successfully trained 250 students in Hyderabad, with 110 of these graduates already hired into the AWS Data Centre Operations team.

Broad Skilling Initiatives: AWS has trained over 10 million individuals in India in cloud skills since 2017 through various platforms, including AWS Skill Builder, AWS Educate, and AWS re/Start.

AWS is increasingly looking toward experienced professionals from non-traditional technology backgrounds to manage its mission-critical data centre infrastructure. By prioritizing discipline, precision, and technical aptitude, the company has successfully integrated individuals such as retired military personnel and tenured manufacturing engineers into its operations team. Employees note that the company’s culture and tailored onboarding processes allow them to leverage their past expertise in electrical, network, and systems management to power the world’s cloud infrastructure.
