Amazon India Records 2x Growth in Two-Wheeler Sales Driven by Tier 2 and Tier 3 Markets
Electric Vehicles: Amazon India has announced a significant surge in its two-wheeler category, reporting a 2x year-on-year growth in sales. The expansion is largely fueled by consumers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, signaling a transformative shift in how Indians approach high-consideration automotive purchases.
Non-Metro Markets Lead the Charge:
The trend toward online vehicle purchasing is predominantly a non-metro phenomenon:
Broad Reach: Nearly 2 in 3 two-wheeler buyers on Amazon.in now hail from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
EV Adoption: The shift is even more pronounced in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, where 7 in 10 buyers are located beyond metropolitan areas.
Emerging Hubs: Cities like Kakinada, Tirupati, and Nellore have seen exponential growth, with some regions recording up to a 12x increase in bookings. Over the last 12 months, customers from more than 2,300 Tier 3 towns have purchased a two-wheeler on the platform for the first time.
Premium and Electric Demand on the Rise:
Consumers are increasingly moving toward higher-spec models, with the average transaction value now exceeding ₹1 lakh.
Premium Growth: Premium motorcycle sales have surged by nearly 5x YoY.
Mid-Premium EVs: In the electric segment, there is a clear migration from entry-level options to mid-premium models; the ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh price bracket now accounts for over 50% of total EV demand on the platform.
Enhanced Buying Experience through AI:
To simplify the complex decision-making process for online vehicle buyers, Amazon has integrated advanced AI-powered tools:
Rufus: An AI shopping assistant that provides detailed comparisons on range, mileage, and features.
LensAI: Enables image-based search, allowing users to identify and explore models seen on the road.
Review Summaries: Compresses thousands of user reviews into concise snapshots to aid informed decision-making.
Price History: Offers transparency, helping customers track price fluctuations to identify the best time to purchase.
A Robust Ecosystem:
The platform currently hosts over 3,000 OEM-authorized dealers, featuring major brands such as Royal Enfield, KTM, Triumph, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, and Hero MotoCorp. By offering full price transparency, digital payment options, and the assurance of manufacturer warranties, Amazon is streamlining the traditional, often cumbersome, vehicle-buying journey.
Aman Lohan, Director – Home, Kitchen and Outdoors, Amazon India, stated, “For customers, Amazon.in brings together the largest selection by brands, price points, and fuel types in one place with full price transparency and the convenience of digital payments. For brands, it expands their reach.”
