Shaktikanta Das as Union Finance Minister? This is His Speciality..
Speculation is rife that a major reshuffle of the Union Cabinet is on the cards. Rumors intensified after Union Home Minister Amit Shah met with President Droupadi Murmu two days ago, causing tension among union ministers. However, the most significant rumor emerging from this is that Nirmala Sitharaman might be replaced as the Union Finance Minister by former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. Meanwhile, discussions suggest that Nirmala Sitharaman might be assigned the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education).
Appointing Domain Experts in Key Ministries
Since taking office as Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has introduced a novel formula. Instead of appointing career politicians to head core ministries, he initiated a culture of appointing domain experts. A prime example of this is the appointment of former diplomat S. Jaishankar as the Minister of External Affairs. Given Jaishankar’s deep expertise in foreign affairs, India’s geopolitical standing has transformed on the global stage. Since Jaishankar knows exactly how to deal with different nations, it has made things much easier for PM Modi.
PM Modi is reportedly thinking along similar lines regarding the Finance Ministry. He has almost arrived at a decision to replace the current Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, with former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. Modi strongly believes that Das can effectively steer the country’s economy, especially during challenging financial times. That is why the decision has been made to induct Shaktikanta Das, a financial expert, into the Union Cabinet. Currently, Shaktikanta Das is serving as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.
Shaktikanta Das’s Background
Shaktikanta Das is a highly experienced and senior retired officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). If he becomes part of the Union Cabinet, the government will immensely benefit from his vast administrative experience spanning over four decades across various sectors of administration and finance.
He served as the 25th Governor of the RBI from 2018 to 2024. During times of global crises, he provided robust stability to the Indian banking system. During his tenure at the Union Ministry of Finance, he was directly involved in the preparation of eight Union Budgets, gaining extraordinary experience in managing government finances and shaping economic policies.
During the planning and implementation phases of demonetization in the country, he served as a highly senior and pivotal official in the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance. Additionally, he has served as a member of the 15th Finance Commission and as India’s G20 Sherpa.
An alumnus of the prestigious St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, Shaktikanta Das has also represented the country as India’s Alternate Governor at international financial institutions like the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the New Development Bank (NDB), and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
