Salary to be Cut by 20% for Marrying a Second Time Without a Divorce
The Assam government has taken a crucial decision regarding the ban on polygamy. It has dealt a blow to government employees who marry a second time without legally divorcing their first wife. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a key announcement stating that cuts will be imposed on their salaries.
“If any government employee abandons his wife without legally obtaining a divorce from her and enters into a marital relationship with another woman, action will be taken against that person. A 20% cut will be imposed on that employee’s salary, and that amount will be directly deposited into the first wife’s bank account. However, the wife must submit an application regarding this to the government,” the Chief Minister announced.
Himanta stated that this decision was taken in light of recent incidents coming to light where some government employees were living with another woman before the divorce process was completed. The Chief Minister clarified that the 20% salary cut will continue even if the divorce proceedings with the first wife are currently pending in court. He mentioned that the government’s intention is to provide financial assistance to the first wife without waiting for the legal process to conclude.
At the same time, the Assam government is also set to take action against government employees who neglect their parents. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a 10% salary cut will be imposed on employees who do not care for their parents, and measures will be taken to provide that amount to the parents.
