How Did Maruti Become Hanuman? What Really Happened That Day?
We all know and love Lord Hanuman. He is known for his incredible strength, courage and, above all, his deep devotion to Lord Rama. Whenever people face fear or difficult times, they often remember Hanuman and pray for his strength.
But here is something many people may not know.
Hanuman was not his childhood name.
As a little boy, he was called Maruti. So, how did Maruti become Hanuman? The answer goes back to a fascinating incident from his childhood.
The Day Maruti Saw the Sun
One morning, little Maruti came outside and looked up at the sky. He saw the bright red Sun shining above him. But he did not know what it really was. To Maruti, it looked like a huge, glowing fruit.
He wanted to catch it.
So, without thinking twice, the little boy jumped into the sky and flew towards the Sun. He kept moving higher and higher, as if he was determined to grab the bright fruit in front of him.
The gods were amazed by what they saw. How could such a small child have so much power?
But Lord Indra became worried. Maruti was getting closer to the Sun, and Indra feared that something could go wrong. So he decided to stop the child.
The Vajra That Changed Everything
Indra used his powerful divine weapon, the Vajra, against Maruti. The weapon struck the little boy on his jaw, and Maruti fell down.
When Vayu Dev, the wind god and Maruti’s father, saw his son lying injured, he was heartbroken. He could not accept what had happened to his child.
In his anger and grief, Vayu Dev withdrew his power from the world. Suddenly, there was no air. Without air, living beings could not breathe, and the entire world was thrown into danger.
The gods became worried and went to Vayu Dev. They wanted to calm him and bring life back to the world.
The Gods Blessed Maruti
To make things right, the gods blessed the little Maruti with extraordinary powers. They gave him great strength, wisdom and protection. They also promised that he would be safe from many dangers.
So, what began as a painful incident became a turning point in Maruti’s life. The little boy who had been struck by the Vajra now carried the blessings of the gods.
But there was still one important question.
How did Maruti get the name Hanuman?
How Maruti Became Hanuman
The Vajra had struck Maruti on his jaw. In Sanskrit, “Hanu” means jaw. According to traditional Hindu stories, this childhood incident is connected with the name Hanuman.
That is how the little boy once known as Maruti came to be known as Hanuman.
And that name stayed with him forever.
When His Strength Found a Purpose
Maruti had extraordinary strength from childhood. But his real greatness was not simply in how powerful he was. It was in how he chose to use that power.
Later, Lord Rama entered his life. From that moment, Maruti’s strength found a greater purpose — serving Rama.
He crossed the ocean to help Rama. He searched for Sita and entered Lanka. When Lakshmana’s life was in danger, Hanuman brought the mountain containing the life-saving herb.
He could do things that seemed impossible. Yet he never became proud of his strength.
That is what makes Hanuman so special.
He teaches us that true strength does not need pride. Courage should be used to help others. And whatever power we have should be used for something good.
That is why millions of people continue to love and worship Hanuman.
He is not just a symbol of strength. He represents courage, humility, devotion and selfless service.
And this is the fascinating story of how little Maruti became Hanuman.
