Mumbai: The Bajaj Group, a cornerstone of India’s industrial landscape and one of its largest conglomerates with a market capitalization of USD 148 billion, officially commemorated its centenary today. The milestone marks a remarkable journey that mirrors India’s own transformationfrom the struggle for independence to its current standing as a global economic powerhouse.
A Legacy Rooted in the Freedom Struggle:
The group traces its origins to 1926, founded in Mumbai by Jamnalal Bajaj. A man of immense character, Jamnalal Bajaj was not merely an industrialist but a freedom fighter, social reformer, and philanthropist. History remembers him as the “fifth adopted son” of Mahatma Gandhi. His founding philosophy—prioritizing the “common good over individual gain”—remains the North Star for the group a century later.
Today, the Bajaj Group is an integral part of the Indian fabric, serving one in every three households and providing employment to over 130,000 people.
Prime Ministerial Commendation:
Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi extended his warmest greetings to the Bajaj family and the group’s employees. In a message recognizing their contribution to nation-building, the Prime Minister noted:
“A hundred years is a significant journey for any institution. It reflects not only longevity but also the ability to adapt to changing times, contribute to economic growth, and remain relevant across generations. Institutions with deep roots and experience such as the Bajaj Group have an important role to play in shaping the journey towards Viksit Bharat by 2047.”
A Diversified Global Powerhouse:
With a portfolio of over 100 companies and exports reaching more than 100 nations, the Bajaj brand is synonymous with trust across automobiles, financial services, consumer electricals, and engineering. The group’s listed entities—including Bajaj Auto, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Housing Finance, and Bajaj Electricals—stand as leaders in their respective sectors.
The centenary also marked the announcement of the group’s upcoming foray into the healthcare sector through the Bajaj Integrated Health System.
Voices from the Centenary Celebration:
The milestone was celebrated at the National Sports Club of India in Mumbai, featuring a live performance by Grammy winner Ricky Kej and the unveiling of a special centenary logo. Leadership from across the group shared their vision for the next century:
Niraj Bajaj (Chairman, Bajaj Auto): Emphasized the “India and Bajaj” connection, noting that the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) began a century ago with pioneers like Jamnalalji who believed Bharat must build for itself.
Rajiv Bajaj (MD, Bajaj Auto): Spoke on “Globalisation,” highlighting that Bajaj Auto is now among the top three two-wheeler companies globally. He pointed to the partnership with KTM as proof that Indian companies are now “co-creators of global brands.”
Sanjiv Bajaj (Chairman & MD, Bajaj Finserv): Focused on the “Next 100,” viewing AI and technology as forces for financial inclusion. “Access to finance means access to opportunity,” he stated, reiterating the group’s commitment to empowering India’s youth.
Nirav Bajaj (CEO, Bajaj Integrated Health System): Discussed “Inclusive Development,” unveiling the “Bajaj Beyond” initiative, which aims to impact over 2 crore young Indians in the next five years.
Shekhar Bajaj (Chairman & MD, Bajaj Electricals): Reminded the audience that success is measured not just in numbers, but in “lives touched and values upheld,” reflecting on Jamnalalji’s work in social equity and rural upliftment.
Social Impact and the Future:
Beyond business, the Bajaj Group’s social impact efforts have already transformed the lives of over 10 million beneficiaries. As the group moves into its second century, the focus is shifting from “building institutions to building ecosystems,” ensuring that growth is sustainable, inclusive, and technologically driven.
As the Prime Minister concluded in his message, the years ahead for the Bajaj Group are poised to be defined by continued progress and meaningful contributions to the evolution of modern India.
