10 irrigation projects will be inaugurated this month

CM appreciates ISRO for timely forecasts and reports

The Chief Minister conducted the 44th review meeting on Polavaram and other irrigation projects on Monday at the Secretariat.

He was informed that the earthwork excavated this week was 50,000 cubic metres in the spill channel. The excavation in the approach and pilot channels did not take place, because the area had submerged due to heavy rains.

Out of 1,055 lakh cubic metres, 760 lakh cubic metres have been excavated till date.

The total concrete laid this week was 7,207 cubic metres. As of November 6, 12.31 lakh cubic metres of concrete work is due, out of a total of 16.04 lakh cubic metres.

Officials also reported the status report of the radial gates, in which the assembling of skin plates and arm girders has been completed.

The progress of the diaphragm wall surpassed its weekly target of 36m, as the length achieved this week was 38.6m. By tomorrow, the complete right bank will be completed.

The Chief Minister was informed that tenders will be released within this week, for the appointment of another builder, for the concrete work in the spillway and spill channel.

Officials also presented the video of a miniature of the Polavaram Dam, set up in Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune. The model, sponsored by the Polavaram Project Authority, is spread across 1 acre, and is represented in a scale of 1:140. The cost of the project is approximately ₹40 lakhs.

The purpose of the miniature is to understand the mechanics and practical implications of the Polavaram Dam. There are trials under progress, that will also help to understand the effect of floodseasons.

In a video conference, the Chief Minister reviewed the 28 irrigation projects, and announced that 10 projects will be inaugurated this month.

The 10 projects are the Yerracalva project, Pogonda Reservoir, Pedapalem Lift Irrigation Scheme, Chinasana Lift Irrigation Scheme, Marala Reservoir, Kandaleru Left Canal, Owk Tunnel, Gorakallu Reservoir, Cherlopally Reservoir and the Siddapuram Lift Irrigation scheme. 

The Purushottapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme, Mucchumarri Lift Irrigation Scheme and the Sarada River Anicut has been inaugurated.

The Chief Minister congratulated the Collectorate of Kurnool, for efficient work on the projects. Within a week, the Owk Tunnel will be able to release water to its full capacity.

He also instructed officials to conduct an exercise and understand the requirements of the state in a more detailed manner. “Analyse the impact of rainfall so far, availability and requirement of water and technologies, current patterns of water utilization, and the shortfalls – we need to be able to predict the deficits and surplus of water resources in the state”, he said.

He also asked them to focus on cropping patterns for the different agro-climatic zones, and work towards enhancing the nature and impact of irrigation.

ISRO appreciated by CM

During the teleconference on Neeru Chettu this morning, the Chief Minister appreciated the role of ISRO and their timely forecasts, analyses and reports. During major cyclonic turbulence, the reports sent by ISRO forewarned the various agencies of the government enabling them to be prepared. The Chief Minister also mentioned Rajashekhar, an ISRO official, and appreciated his role for taking keen interest in coordinating with RTG.

National Water Mission

The National Water Mission, a programme recently launched by the central government, is an instruction to all states to conduct a detailed water audit. The Andhra Pradesh government had already completed 80% of the programme’s requirements.

The Chief Minister said, “We should proudly serve as a role model for other states, and lead them to a better understanding of water resources.”
